Health & Safety

35%The Mature Miles Index (MMI) scores destinations on the five pillars that research shows matter most to senior travellers: health and safety, getting around, cost, climate and things to do. Every score comes from publicly available sources. No opinions. No paid scores.
Is it safe?
Can I get around easily?
Will my money go far?
Is there a hill to my hotel?
Each pillar is weighted by how much it matters to a mature traveller. Safety counts most, because nothing else matters if you don’t feel safe.

35%Airport to town without a taxi, sights without a car, and routes without stairs or steep walks.
25%What a comfortable day really costs: hotel, meals, transport and entry fees.
20%How many months are comfortable: not too hot, too cold or too wet.
10%The variety of experiences, including easy ones, and good day trips.
10%How the 100 points are shared out.
Two ways onto the Index: destinations that applied and earned MMI certification, and our Stowaways, overlooked by the popular lists, spotted by us.
Every destination gets a scorecard like this one, showing exactly where it shines and where it struggles.
Food, landmarks, fun facts and the vital numbers, for every city on the world’s Top 100 list.
Every score comes from public sources anyone can check. None of our own opinions, no hearsay, no favourites.
Each fact points to one source, such as official travel advice or published price surveys. You can check it.
Paris and a small island get measured with the same ruler. Where evidence is missing, we say so instead of guessing.
Each figure links back to the page it came from, and a second checker confirms it before a score is published.
Openly AI-assisted, independently checked. We use AI tools to help gather evidence, and we say so. But every figure must come from its source, and every score is double-checked before it’s published.
Apply for an MMI assessment in about ten minutes. Score 75 or more and your certificate is included, along with your place on the Index. Apply by 15 December 2026 to be considered for the first monthly Index, published on 1 January 2027.

Mature Miles is the work of Allan Barnard, a veteran radio broadcaster based in Riebeek Kasteel, near Cape Town.
Radio teaches you to ask the question your listener is really thinking. For travel after 60 that question is simple: is this place right for me? The Mature Miles Index exists to answer it straight.
